We aim to make an impact in our community through volunteer involvement and the firm’s dedication to supporting our local neighborhoods. We partner with a number of charitable and community organizations regularly to help support the growth and development of everything from special projects to charitable initiatives.
Miller Legg’s Community Involvement
Mercedes Benz Corporate Run / Walk 2017 The Miller Legg team of 15 runners and walkers participated in the annual Mercedes Benz Corporate Run. The MBCR is an institution in South Florida and is one of the largest 5K races in the nation. This year, over 8.000 participants ran or walked the 3.1 mile course! The United Way of Miami is the charity partner for this amazing event.
Tour de Broward 2017 Miller Legg was proud to participate, once again, in the 8th Annual Tour de Broward, sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital at Miramar Regional Park. Tour de Broward features a variety of events including a 3K walk, a 5K timed run, cycling challenges and the Power of Play Kids Zone. Funds from previous years have supported the hospital’s Heart Institute, which provides children with a complete continuum of care from diagnosis to repair of congenital defects and other cardiac dysfunctions. It houses the Pediatric Heart Transplant Program, one of only two of its kind in South Florida. Funds have also supported programs for the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, helping to improve the lives of many oncology patients and families. The 2017 event exceeded its fundraising goal of $500,000!
Boys and Girls Club / Feeding South Florida Annual Meals of Hope 2017 We had a great opportunity to help our South Florida community again this year – the Boys & Girls Club hosted the Annual Meals of Hope Event, to provide meals to families in need through the Boys & Girls Club and Feeding South Florida. This year, the organization and 200+ volunteers (including 14 Miller Leggers) was a huge success! 75,000 meals were packaged to provide to families in need with large rations of rice & beans, supplemented with soy for added protein. A DJ kept the pace up and everyone’s spirits high.
EASE Foundation 2nd Annual Backpack Drive 2016 Miller Legg staff donated backpacks and/or supplies for the EASE Foundation’s 2nd Annual Backpack Drive! Founded in 1988 by the business community in Davie, the Emergency Assistance Service Effort Foundation (EASE) provides a hand up to those families who are trying to help themselves out of a difficult situation. The Foundation has helped over 45,000 families in Broward County with household and school supplies, toys for the holidays, financial assistance, food and clothing donations.Miller Legg has been a great supporter of EASE and staff have voluntarily donated food, clothes and school supplies. In addition, our Director of Business Development has been on the foundation’s Board for nearly 16 years!
EASE Foundation Annual Toy Drive Miller Legg also supports the EASE Foundation in Davie by participating in an annual Toy Drive during the month of December. New, unwrapped toys and gift cards are happily donated, which were delivered to some very happy and thankful teenagers between the ages of 14-17 before Christmas.
Seafarer’s House We were proud to support the Seafarer’s House organization again this year for their “Shoebox Christmas” event. The organization collects and distributes wrapped shoe boxes filled with socks, toiletries, and holiday cheer to thousands of seafarers who come from all over the world into Port Everglades during the holiday season.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month Breast cancer is one of the most challenging journeys a woman may face in her lifetime. One in eight women will unfortunately experience it. We can’t prevent breast cancer, but we can raise awareness of disease and work to support the cause and THINK PINK by supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This foundation gives women the life-saving information, compassionate support, and timely care they need to live full lives.
Children’s Harbor Pizza Party 2016 We hosted a pizza party and field day for children residing at Children’s Harbor in western Pembroke Pines. There were about 20 children from toddlers to high school age who participated along with 5 house parents. In addition to the lunch, we played games including guessing celebrity names, basketball, bean bag toss and the grand finale, the water balloon toss. The special treat was our own Miss Sheila teaching the children to play the dun duns (drums from western Africa). Children’s Harbor, Inc. is a non-profit organization that makes it possible for children in foster care to not be separated from their siblings and to reside in a loving and safe environment. Miller Legg has been involved with Children’s Harbor since its inception and looks forward to our continued relationship as a friend, supporter and consultant.
Send Your Sales Tax To Schools Bob Legg, a founding principal of Miller Legg, was responsible for getting an instrumental State Bill passed in 2006. The Send Your Sales Tax To Schools Initiative allows businesses who collect sales tax to forgo the sales tax collection allowance and donate that percentage directly to technology initiatives for our local schools. Since the adoption of the Send Your Sales Tax To Schools Initiative in 2007, $800,000 in tax credit revenue has been collected for Broward County Schools.
Miller Legg staff have served on boards or participated in the Davie / Cooper City Chamber of Commerce, Miramar – Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce, the City of Plantation Landscape Planning and Review Board, the Broward County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, the Florida Earth Foundation Advisory Committee, Charity Guild, Heart Gallery of Broward County, the Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation, the McFatter Technical College and Technical High School Advisory Council, and the City of Oakland Park Art and Culture Board.
