Habitat Restoration
Indian Trace Community Development District Increment II Habitat Restoration
Weston, Florida
This habitat restoration/creation project is the first phase of over 1,900 acres of wetland enhancement activities in western Broward County, Florida, adjacent to the South Florida Water Management District's East Everglades Buffer Strip. The project, due to its large size and diversity of habitats, has become a vital part for the enhancement of the Buffer Strip's fragile ecosystem.
Miller Legg prepared design and construction documents that specified large Melaleuca stands to be cleared and the areas graded to design elevations to establish openwater, marsh, forested wetland and tropical hammock habitats. Water control structures were also designed and installed to provide the hydrology required to support these habitats. Planting designs were developed for the newly-created habitats that mimic the native South Florida/Everglades plant communities. The diversity of the plant species used in the design ranged from herbaceous perennials in the marsh zones to native grasses, shrubs and canopy forming hardwoods in the forested wetlands and tropical hammocks
In addition to design efforts for this project, Miller Legg was responsible for construction observation of all phases of the project, as well as the monitoring and subsequent submittal of reports to the associated Federal, State and local permitting agencies.
Since completion of the project, the endangered wood stork, snail kite and bald eagle have been documented roosting and feeding in the project area. Seldom can one find fewer than 100 wading birds, including ibis, herons, egrets and roseate spoonbills on the project site at any time. American alligators, bobcats and deer also have been documented inhabiting the project site since its completion.
