Wood Storks spotted at New Doral Glades Park Wetland area

As the City of Doral and its residents are enjoying the new Doral Glades Park, some feathered friends were also enjoying the cool weather in the wetland Conservation and Mitigation Area found on the east end of the park . The wetland area has a constructed boardwalk that allows residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors. After taking a walk to the boardwalk feel free to go inside their beautiful Nature Center and enjoy the gorgeous pictures and informational displays about the historical and current South Florida ecosystems. Covering about 25 acres, this park is located on NW 74th Street between NW 97th Avenue and NW 107th Avenue in the City of Doral. Its grand opening was August 2nd, 2019 and Miller Legg has been working with the City on wetland mitigation compliance and permitting through the South Florida Water Management District, Miami-Dade DERM and Army Corps of Engineers. Additional Amenities include a beautiful nature center, basketball courts, playgrounds, volleyball courts and picnic areas.

Wood Storks are federally and state protected birds. In appearance they have no feathers on the neck and head and have white feathers on their body with black tail feathers (see photo above). They stand approximately 3-4 feet tall and feed in wetlands for small fish, crawfish and frogs. As noted on the FWC website the wood stork is the only species of stork that breeds in the U.S. and are very social in nesting habitats. Colonies in South Florida form late November to early March. From this photo it looks like the start of a small colony here in the City of Doral.
