ENGINEERING WEEK SHOWCASE — During this special week, we’d like to honor the engineers and engineering firms across the country that comprise The HFW Companies. We’re proud that the infrastructure design work they do provides such a significant positive impact on the communities and clients we serve.
Today we’d like to start in South Florida and recognize Miller Legg, showcasing the work its engineers did on behalf of the Ransom Everglades School in Miami, Fla. Miller Legg provided civil engineering services related to both the demolition of the existing campus facilities and new construction of a three-story, 45,000-square-foot STEM building on campus.
Services included schematic design through construction documents for improvement to the site demolition, water, sewer, grading, paving, signing, pavement marking, and storm drainage. Miller Legg also provided bidding assistance for utilities improvements and construction observation services.
Among the engineering team’s big challenges: The site contained a live 12-inch public-owned water main that ran directly underneath the proposed building footprint.
The permitting process alone for relocating the water main likely would have taken 10 to 12 months to complete, which would have delayed the process considerably. But the engineering team resolved this challenge by devising a system to brace the pipeline in place at multiple points to protect it while the building contractor erected the building footings and walls.
Hats off to the innovative civil engineering team at Miller Legg.
