DJ Wilcox NaturaL Area – Boardwalk, Trails, AND Observation Tower
The DJ Wilcox Natural Area is rich with flora and fauna with a one-mile interpretive trail and an observation tower. The trail leads hikers through several different habitats, including oak hammock, pine flatwoods, and a baygall swamp. Miller Legg was selected to design an 800-foot ADA accessible boardwalk with two viewing platforms to allow hikers safe access to the trailhead.
As part of the project, Miller Legg obtained permits from the US Army Corps of Engineers and South Florida Water Management District, as well as provided an assessment of the existing pond and proposed a restoration plan. Miller Legg provided design and specification guidance for the boardwalk and observation platform, conducted a habitat assessment, wetland jurisdictional determination, wetland and surface water quality assessment, and survey services. The design was a prototype for additional boardwalks within St. Lucie County to be used in their preserve areas.
