Marco Island Helps State Threatened Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia floridana)

Good news for the threatened burrowing owls from Southwest Florida.  On January 21st, 2020 Marco Island city council made a motion to approve the Safe Harbor Management Agreement for Urban Florida Burrowing Owls in Marco Island, Florida. The motion was approved 7-0. This agreement which is between the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FFWC) Audubon Western Everglades, City of Marco Island and the participating property owner allows City residents to receive up to $250 per year to allow the installation of Burrowing Owl starter burrows on their property to attract breeding pairs of owls.  These burrows will be dug by volunteers from Audubon Western Everglades whom will also track the progress and success of each burrow.   The typical breeding season for the Florida Burrowing Owl is February 15 to July 10, though Burrowing Owls can breed earlier or later. And this is why the City is trying to push for this programs to start now to gain traction in the City.
